Quran Surah:18 Ayah:82

Background:

The verse appearing above carries the segment of an event described in the Holy Qura’n about a visit which took place between Hazrat Musa and Hazrat Khidar (A.S.). It goes about this that when they set on a journey, they chanced to pass by a town. As their provision of journey was finished, they asked its people for food, they refused to host them.

It was then that when they found there a wall tending to fall. So, he (Khidar) set it right. Seeing the ill-treatment of the people of this town, Hazrat Musa (A.S.) said in utter surprise, “Had you wished, you would have charged a fee for it.” Khidar replied, “Here is the point of parting ways between me and you.” Then, Hazrat Khidar (A.S.) explained to him the reality of things they came across during their whole journey including the event which took place with them with regard to the people of town. This is what the concerned verse contains.

The same even reveals many a substantial facts as follows:

  • Allah, the Almighty made an arrangement for setting right the wall belonging to the two orphans from unknown source in order to protect the treasure beneath it. The reason He explained to do so is وَكَانَ اَبُوْهُمَا صَالِحًـا “their father was a pious man”. It does imply that it was by the virtue of the piety and righteousness of their father that Allah, the Almighty Himself made special arrangement from the unknown sources to protect his property so that his children might take the advantage of it after they grew up.

It also indicates the fact that the piety of parents benefits their offspring not only in this world but also after they pass away. More importantly, it helps not only to reform their characters and improve their spirituality but also causes material benefits to them as also revealed through the event mentioned above that it was only by dint of a father’s piety that Allah, the Almighty protected his treasure which later allowed his offspring benefit from.

  • Through the account of this event we come to know a reality that a man is gifted with limited knowledge based on which he can notice only the apparent things and with the help of the same thing he derives a conclusion. As a result, he is subject to come to a wrong conclusion because he can’t go into its depth as was the case with Hazrat Musa (A.S.)’s opinion.

Hence, it is must for a man to take the help of right instructions given by Allah, the owner of unknown knowledge in every sphere of his day-to-day life and try to lead his life accordingly. Since, it is the only way to protect oneself from being misled.

  • The third reality is that Allah, the Almighty alone is the protector and supporter of one who has no other supporter. A man can’t even visualize how he is helped by Him through unknown sources as was the case with the treasure of two orphans being in danger, but, even they did not know if it was in such condition and how to protect it. But, by His ultimate virtue, Allah, the Almighty managed two people for this purpose from outside. Consider, what could it be rather than the support from Allah, the Almighty. Hence, we must turn towards Him, the Originator of all sources, in every wall of our life.
  • Though we are allowed to abide by a principle ‘tit for tit’, but, what we learn from the event mentioned above is that we should behave well one who misbehaves us just like Hazrat Khidar (A.S.) who set right the wall tending to fall despite the people of this town ill-treated him refusing to host him. Obviously, no one can deny the good effect it might have left on them and good reward from Allah, the Almighty. Therefore, Allah says:

Certainly, only if we apply the same rule in our life, it would surely cause not even to arise any problem as well as prove to change the mindsets of many a people (as the life accounts of the new converters to Islam stand as a witness to this fact). Similarly, we can’t even forecast the benefits of good conducts. May Allah, the Almighty grant us ability to act upon it!
