It is narrated on the authority of Tamim ad-Dari ؓthat the Apostle of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) observed: The Holy Quran is a proof on behalf of you or against you. (Muslim)

Explanation:

The expression used here as ‘The Holy Quran is a proof on behalf of you or against you’ means that the Holy Qura’n will intercede with Allah, the Almighty for one who fulfills its rights while one who disregards its rights, it will get him doomed to Hell-fire. The Holy Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said, “The Holy Qura’n is an intercessor, the intercession of which will be surely granted. It is such a claimant that the claim of which will be heard.

Hence, it will lead to Paradise anyone who took into account (acted upon its commandments) while it will drag to Hell anyone who put its commandments aside. (Ibne Habban) In other words, it will intercede with Allah, the Almighty to get the status elevated and forgiveness of one who took its commandments into consideration. It is the very person for whom it is a proof. On the contrary, one who disregarded its commandments; it will stand against him and cause him to be doomed to Hell having made a claim against him.

It is narrated on the authority of Hazrat Abu Musa Ashari ؓ: Verily, the Holy Qura’n may prove for you to be a means of both reward and punishment. Hence, you must abide by its commandments, or else, it is feared that it may be after you (being against you to get you punished), since one who abides by its commandments, it will be a means of admitting him in the gardens of Paradise. On the contrary, against whom the Qura’n stands, it causes to get him thrown into Hell having taken him by the nape of his neck. (Hulyat-ul-Auliya)

Through the tradition mentioned above, we came to know that mere the recitation of the Holy Qura’n is not enough to get salvation, rather abiding by its commandments is must. The way the Holy Qura’n is a means of getting elevated the ranks of its reciter and attaining Allah’s blessings and favours, or a means of the destruction and earning Allah’s displeasure and His punishment in the world Hereafter of one who disregards its commandments, in the same way, it may be a means of removing the difficulties of its recitor and a way to earn his prestige and high status while one who disregards it, it may be a means of earning disgrace and evil days and starvation for one who disregards its commandments in this world too.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْفَعُ بِهَذَا الْکِتَابِ أَقْوَامًا وَيَضَعُ بِهِ آخَرِينَ

“By this Book, Allah would exalt some peoples and degrade others.” (Muslim)

Hazrat Uqbah ؓnarrates that once while they were accompanied by the Holy Prophet ﷺ in a journey, all of sudden, they were caught by an utter darkness and hurricane. It was then that the Holy Prophet ﷺ began to seek Allah’s protection and said, “Seek Allah’s protection through Muawwazatain (Qul Auzu birabbil Falaq and Qul Auzu birabbinnas), hence, there are no other Surahs better than these for one who seeks protection. (Abu Dawud)

Allah, the Almighty let lose such a Satan on one who disregards the Holy Qura’n in the world who keep them in a wrong notion as to be on the right path. Says the Holy Qura’n:

وَمَنْ يَّعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهٗ شَيْطٰنًا فَهُوَ لَهٗ قَرِيْنٌ (36) وَاِنَّهُمْ لَيَصُدُّوْنَهُمْ عَنِ السَّبِيْلِ وَيَحْسَبُوْنَ اَنَّهُمْ مُّهْتَدُوْنَ (37)

Quran Surah:43 Ayah:36-37

“Whoever makes himself blind against the advice of Rahman, We assign for him a devil who accompanies him all the time.”

Without doubt, one who disregards the Holy Qura’n is subject to lead a life full of distress and destitution and he will be raised blind on the Day of Judgment. Says the Holy Qura’n:

’’وَمَنْ اَعْرَضَ عَنْ ذِکْرِیْ فَاِنَّ لَہٗ مَعِیْشَۃً ضَنْکاً وَ نَحْشُرُہٗ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَۃِ اَعْمَیٰ‘‘ (سورہ طہٰ ۱۲۴(

“As for the one who turns away from My message, he shall have a straitened life, and We shall raise him blind on the Day of Judgment.”

In this verse, there has been mentioned a stern warning pertaining to both here and the world hereafter against one who disregards the Holy Qura’n.

At another place, Allah, the Almighty said about the Holy Prophet ﷺ that he will make a claim against such people in the court of Allah, the Almighty:

’’وَ قَالَ الرَّسُولُ یَا رَبِّ اِنَّ قَوْمِیْ اِتَّخَذُوْ ا ھٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَھْجُوْراً‘‘ (الفرقان:۳۰(

“And the messenger will say, “O my Lord, my people had taken this Qur’an as deserted.”

Through the verses mentioned above, we come to a conclusion that the Holy Qura’n will make its recitor worthy of receiving Allah’s mercy and be blessed with His forgiveness while those who disregard it, it will stand against them and make a claim to get them punished.

May Allah, the Almighty grant us ability to deliberate in the verses of the Holy Qura’n and abide by its commandments! May He also make the Holy Qura’n our intercessor! (Ameen!)
